ONLY ONE ENTRY PER PERSON PER WEEK NAME: ADDRESS: PHONE: By Donald P. Blanchard, Sr. "The Assumption Pioneer" 100 Years Ago This Week November 20, 1909 LOCAL NEWS Mr. and Mrs. George Adolph, of Attakapas Canal, are the parents of a little girl born to them last Tuesday.

A sweet little daughter entered the home of Mr. and Mrs. Philip Bergeron of Attakapas Canal last Tuesday morning. Mr. George Dugas, assistant cashier of the Bank of Paincourtville, and Clay J.

Dugas, manager of the Avon Planting Company, were called here on account of the critical illness of their father, Mr. Claiborne Dugas. PAINCOURTVILLE NOTES Mr. B. Oncale left Saturday night for Napoleonville and on Saturday joined a large crowd on a trip over the Lake.

The Lake got so rough, Benny says he never thought he had his Sunday clothes on and jumped into the water to guide the skiff ashore, only too glad to be able to do that. Mr. and Mrs. George Dugas, Mr. and Mrs.

Kempton Dugas left Thursday for Napoleonville to be with their sick father, Mr. Claiborne Dugas. KILLED BY FALLING DERRICK A very unfortunate accident occurred in the fields of Sans Nom Plantation last Monday morning. Mr. Alcide Mire, of the planting firm of Mire Robichaux, while attending to his duties on Sans Nom Plantation, which place he is half owner, was struck by the heavy boom of the derrick and was fatally injured.

He was picked up and carried home in an unconscious condition and died Wednesday morning. Mr. Mire was a native of Lafourche Parish and was engaged in the sugar planting business. He came to Assumption several months ago, having purchased in partnership with Mr. E.

G. Robichaux, the Sans Nom Plantation situated in lower Assumption. Deceased is survived by a wife and four children. PROMINENT CITIZEN ANSWERS LAST CALL Yesterday evening, Friday, November 19th, at 6 o'clock, Mr. Claiborne Dugas, aged 61 years, month and 20 days, died at his home in this town, after an illness of several months.

Mr. Dugas was the fourth of one of the oldest and most prominent families in Assumption. Deceased was born In Paincourtville and received his educational training in the private schools of that place. At an early age he embarked in the flatboat and steamboat business, and for several years was engaged in the planting business holding the position of overseer on his father's plantation. At an early age, he became the proprietor of the Armelise Plantation store and his business steadily increased and for several years he was known as one of the most successful merchants in this parish.

In 1887, he was appointed Clerk of Court of Assumption, and since that time he has made his home in Napoleonville. He held the office of Clerk of Court from 1886 to 1900 and from 1900 to the present time he has held the office of Deputy Clerk of Court. He was married twice, his first wife being Miss Lee Landry. The following children were born from this union: Clay J. Dugas, manager of Avon Planting Company, George Dugas, assistant cashier of the Bank of Paincourtville, Mrs.

Kempton Dugas and Mrs. The Assamption Plencer, Tharsday, November 19, 2009, Page 5 From Bygone Years. Mederic Roger. After the death of his first wife, he was married to Miss Lea Triche and the following children were born to them: Mrs. Eugene Roger, Xavier and Benjamin Dugas.

The above children together with his wife survive him as well as the following brothers and sisters: Messrs. Honore, U. Felix, Elphege and Henry Dugas, and Mrs. Joseph E. LeBlanc and Mrs.

Pauline Rodrigue. Mr. Claiborne Dugas was one of the best known citizens in Assumption, and he was loved and esteemed for his kind and noble impulses. He was unselfish and charitable to a fault, and his kindness during his days of prosperity was known to all. He was a kind and gentle father and devoted husband and a warm and true friend.

In his death, the parish loses another of the links of the chain which binds us to the good old days. Mr. Dugas was stricken with a paralytic stroke about seven years ago and though he recovered somewhat from the effects, he was compelled to use walking canes to get about. He was doing nicely up to about eight months ago when he began suffering with an ailment of the throat. Though he consulted the leading physicians in New Orleans, nothing could be done to save him.

His throat grew steadily worse, and finally it caused his death. He passed away peacefully yesterday evening surrounded by his wife and children and his brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held this afternoon, Saturday, at St. Anne's Catholic Church. After services here, his body will be taken to Paincourtville and buried in the family tomb at the St.

Elizabeth Cemetery. 75 Years Ago This Week November 17, 1934 LOCAL NEWS Mr. Sam Klotz returned from a visit to Monroe Wednesday accompanied by his father-inlaw, Mr. Baer. Mrs.

X. M. Dugas returned from New Orleans Thursday where she had taken her daughter, Dorothy, who was operated on Tuesday for appendicitis at Hotel Dieu. Her condition is reported very much improved. PAINCOURTVILLE NOTES The Sisters of Mt.

Carmel will give a Thanksgiving Play on Sunday, November 25th at 3 P. M. for the benefit of the St. Elizabeth's School. Admission is fifteen cents.

Everyone is invited to attend helping a worthy cause. We learned with regret of the death of the Rev. Albert Biever, S. pastor of the Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Orleans. Father Biever was well known here having preached a mission several years ago.

We hope those among whom he labored will unite in prayer for the repose of his soul. ERNEST L. GUILLOT PASSES AWAY Mr. Ernest L. Guillot, aged 81 years and 9 months, passed away at his home at Plattenville early Wednesday morning after an illness of several months.

Deceased was born and lived all of his life in Assumption Parish. For a number of years he was interested in farming and the mercantile business. He was a good citizen and a devout Catholic. He was a member of the St. Joseph Society and of Assumption Council Knights of Columbus, in the latter, he received the degree of Honor Member.

He is survived by his wife, nee Caroline Schreiber, and the following children: Ignace Rodolph and E. L. Guillot, and Mrs. Charles Thiac, of this parish, Mrs. Henry LeBlanc, of Port Allen and Mrs.

Nemour Simoneaux, of New Orleans. Funeral services were held at Requiem Mass on Thursday morning, and burial in the family tomb. To the family, the Pioneer extends its sincere sympathy. DEATH OF ALCEE GAUTHREAUX Mr. Alcee Gauthreaux, aged 62 years, a native of Assumption Parish, died suddenly from a heart attack last Saturday night at his home at Attakapas Canal.

He was elected and served as Justice of the Peace on the 6th ward for a number of years, and he was appointed Conservation Agent for the parish during the Sanders administration. He was a good citizen and was popular with everyone who knew him. He is survived by his wife, nee Bergeron, and the following children: Felix, Henry, Harry, Albert, Marie, Leo and Alcee Gauthreaux, Jr. Funeral services were held at the Canal Church Tuesday with interment in the family tomb.

MUSTANGS COAST TO 20-0 WIN OVER D'VILLE The Assumption Mustangs coasted to an easy 20-0 win over the Donaldsonville High Tigers in the Donaldsonville High Stadium Friday night. The Mustangs scored in all but one period stacking up a touchdown in each of the three periods. The outclassed Tigers started to defeat early in the first quarter when Mustang halfback Richard Robichaux intercepted a pass on the Tiger 30. Six plays later, Robichaux scored on a pitchout around end from the 15 yard line and Mustang quarterback Julius Sternfels ran the extra point over to give the Assumption eleven a 7-0 lead at the end of the first period of play.

The Tiger defense held tight for the second quarter but fell again in the third. Halfback Carroll Folse of Assumption broke loose in the third period on a 40 yard run and brought the ball to the three yard line with Jimmy Brien scoring from there. Sternfels went up the middle for the point after. In the last quarter, Assumption added its last touchdown with Sternfels passing down field completing three in a row to bring the pigskin down to the six. Brien scored from the three and Sternfels ran for the point after tally.

Assumption plays its final season game Friday night when they meet Chalmette High here at Memorial Stadium. ASSUMPTION TO PLAY IN SUGAR CANE BOWL Two of South Louisiana's finest football teams, Assumption High School, of Napoleonville and Hanson Memorial High, of Franklin, have been chosen to play in the 15th annual Thibodaux Lions Club Sugar Cane Bowl. The 1959 Classic will be held at St. Joseph Stadium Thanksgiving afternoon at 2:30. While Assumption plays in Class AA circles and Hanson is a Class A club, both teams have enviable records against top flight competition.

Against one common foe, Morgan City High School, the Hanson Memorial team rolled up a 26 to 12 victory last weekend and earlier this year Assumption romped to a 19 to 0 win. Thus far this season, Hanson has dropped only one game and has five wins. Breaux Bridge, slated to enter the State Class A playoffs from District 5A whipped Hanson 13-0. The Tigers smacked a strong Rayne High School club 19-13 before whipping Morgan City. Assumption has six wins and two losses.

One of the defeats was at the hands of Thibodaux High School and the other was a 7-6 defeat by Lockport High. Hanson, as well as Assumption, has been a Cane Bowl participant on several previous occasions and has never met defeat in this event. Both Hanson and Assumption have produced outstanding performances in Thibodaux. Funds raised by the Thibodaux Lions Club through this annual event are used in the club's conservation program and for civic work exclusively..
